Call for SCMP cadetship and internship applications, based in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s most trusted English-language news organisation is seeking promising young journalists for its Cadet Training Programme, and Summer Internship Programme.

CADETSHIP
The year-long programme starts with 10 weeks of intensive training on all aspects of journalism, followed by a rotation to the major desks for the remainder of the training year, these being the Hong Kong, China and Business desks.
Who? Talented, ambitious young journalists or graduates. Excellent English, strong writing skills, and a curious mind are essential. Cantonese, Putonghua, and multi-media skills are very beneficial. Applicants should hold university or graduate degrees.
What? Cadets earn professional salaries and are closely mentored during training designed to fast-track their development. Upon successful completion of the programme, Cadets will move to permanent reporting jobs on their assigned desks.
When? Before February 10, applicants should send a cover letter, attaching a full CV detailing language skills and journalistic experience. The application should also include three published English language news or feature articles from a print or online publication, and a letter of recommendation. The next class of Cadets will report for duty on June 26, 2017.
Where? The cadetship takes place in Hong Kong.

INTERNSHIP
SCMP’s interns report on everything from the China economy and protest marches to store sales and escalator safety in Hong Kong
Our summer interns spend 12 exciting weeks as paid reporters, helping to cover one of the world’s biggest stories – China.
Next summer’s internships will run for 12 weeks — from June 5 to August 25, 2017.
Applicants should be third- or fourth-year university students or be university graduates with excellent English. Fluency in Cantonese or Putonghua is a plus. So are multimedia skills.
Would-be interns should send a cover letter explaining their interest in SCMP, their language skills and journalism experience. Applications should also include three published (in print or online) news or feature articles as well as a CV.
The deadline for overseas applications is January 31, 2017.
The deadline for local applications (Hongkongers or students attending local universities) is February 28, 2017.
Successful applicants will be notified in mid-March.
